Program Reference Group (PRG) for the proposed Certificate IV in Biometric Technologies
The Canberra Institute of Technology has developed a Certificate IV for Biometric Technologies. The Biometrics Institute participated on a programme reference group.
The biometrics industry identified a significant need for trained biometric technicians in their organisations because the industry is expanding rapidly, constantly evolving and there is currently a shortage of qualified people. The Canberra Institute of Technology (CIT) has developed a Certificate IV in Biometric Technologies in consultation with industry and will deliver this unique accredited training course from 2010.
The Certificate IV in Biometric Technologies will provide a theoretical understanding of the principles governing biometrics at the technician level, and will provide basic practical training in biometric identification and verification technologies, focusing on forensic, government and commercial applications. Students will have the opportunity to specialise in face, eye, hand or voice biometrics and/or biometric business applications.
As an entry-level program, the Certificate IV is perfect for existing and future biometric technical staff in public sector agencies involved in identification or verification of identity, and towards employees of private sector vendors of biometric products and services.
Applications for the Certificate IV in Biometric Technologies can be made online at www.cit.act.edu.au soon.

Biometrics units of competency as part of the Asset Security Training Package (PRS03)
Sept 2006: A suite of nine biometrics units of competency have now been developed for incorporation into the Asset Security Training Package.
Access the information flyer.
July 2007: The PRS03 Asset Security Training Package was reviewed and extensively redeveloped prior to its endorsement. The Training Package contained 107 security units of competency, 31 imported units and eight qualifications ranging from Certificate II to Diploma level across functional areas for security operations, technical security and investigative services.
The units of competency and qualifications framework (including packaging arrangements) were redeveloped to reflect and recognise industry and regulatory requirements. In addition, a suite of 9 biometrics units of competency were included as an extension to PRS03 and endorsed on 12 January 2007. These marked an important milestone for security operations nationally representing for the first time, the outcomes and critical functions and activities required to assess, implement and monitor biometric systems within a security operations context in Australia. See the CPSISC Redevelopment Report July 2007.
