Biometric modality: Finger geometry – what is it?

Finger geometry is a biometric process that captures features such as the shape and surface area of each finger, its length, width, thickness and the distance between the fingers. The latest finger geometry biometric systems operate with three dimensional imaging techniques which improve the accuracy of data acquisition and eliminate variations caused by lighting anomalies and skin pigmentations compared to the images previously produced by two dimensional cameras. Two or more fingers are aligned to a pegged template so that images and multiple measurements can be taken of key features. This process is usually supervised and requires the cooperation of the subject.

NB Finger geometry is designed to work primarily in a one-to-one (1:) verification mode.
