Biometric modality: Gait – use cases
- Medical – gait analysis has been used widely in the development and evaluation of orthopedic applications and research and diagnoses into human pathological conditions such as cerebral palsy and Parkinson’s disease. Detailed body movements are recorded using an array of markers placed on the patient/subject that allow the resultant images to be calibrated and measured with a high degree of precision.
- Sports science – athletes undertake gait testing procedures that are similar to those used in medical applications in order to measure the efficiency of their movement and address biomechanical deficiencies.
- Gait recognition is sometimes used for security purposes such as venue access where it often supports other forms of identity management.
- Law enforcement applications include the retrospective analysis of camera images following a crime and, reportedly in some countries, identifying protesters at public order events.
