Biometric modality: Heartbeat – what is it?

Individuals produce a distinctive heartbeat, regardless of their heart rate and level of exertion, that is determined by a number of factors, for example, the shape, size and sounds of the heart, the arrangement of the heart valves and the pressures they produce and the individual’s general physiology and health. Only the electronic ‘signature’ of the heartbeat is transmitted and received within the biometric system. The characteristics of the heartbeat remain constant, throughout life, unless they are disrupted and altered by illness or a serious cardiac episode such as a stroke or heart attack.
