Biometric modality: Keystrokes – key considerations
The concept of keystroke biometrics dates back to telegraphic messaging and Morse code. In times of war the tapping ‘signature’ of the senders was analysed to ascertain if they were friend or foe. The biometric application of keyboard dynamics was therefore developed from telegraphy and, in turn, other adaptations followed the technology, for example, computer ‘mouse’ manipulation, the swiping motions of fingers on touchscreens etc.
It is important to note that variable factors may affect and disrupt the keystroke dynamics of a person, for example, fatigue, ambient temperature, posture, type of keyboard etc.
Keystroke biometrics are based on behaviour and not physical traits such as fingerprints, iris etc.
