Congress to tackle risks of AI and facial recognition

AI face recognition technology

22 August 2024

Biometrics Institute to explore the future of artificial intelligence (AI), facial recognition and regulation

With the UK considering wider deployment of facial recognition technology for law enforcement purposes and Germany exploring new regulation, the Biometrics Institute Congress taking place 22-23 October in London puts the spotlight on current policy, the impact of the EU AI Act on biometrics and the future of this technology.

Public trust and understanding of AI are key to biometric adoption

The Institute’s recent industry survey reveals a strong connection between public perception of AI and biometrics. A significant 80% of respondents believe public opinion on AI will directly impact their views on biometrics. This highlights the need to address public concerns about AI to build trust in biometric applications.

Facial recognition and multimodal biometrics take centre stage

While nearly half of survey respondents believe use of face biometrics will increase more than any other biometric modality over the next few years, there’s growing acceptance of multimodal biometrics – using a combination of biometric identifiers for enhanced security and accuracy.

Key stakeholders to debate biometric strategies and regulations

The Biometrics Institute Congress brings together key stakeholders for critical discussions on:

  • The impact of the EU AI Act on Biometrics: Experts will explore how the new EU regulations shape the future of biometrics
  • The real risks of AI and facial recognition: Leading figures will discuss the responsible use of these technologies and how to mitigate potential risks
  • Building trust and transparency: The focus will be on addressing public concerns and building trust in biometric applications
Speakers include:

Congress opens with insightful keynotes and the annual report on the State of Biometrics. This report released annually, explores the trends, issues and challenges facing the industry and defines priority themes which the Institute will monitor on an ongoing basis and discuss with members at its various events.

Congress session topics include:
  • The State of Biometrics
  • Biometric strategies and policy
  • Artificial intelligence (AI), facial recognition and regulation
  • Good practice for biometrics in government
  • How to harness technology to protect the vulnerable
  • From physical to digital identity with biometrics
  • Securing biometrics: From prevention to detection
  • Identity management around the world
  • Seamless border management
  • Research, innovation and biometric futures

Open and trusted conversations

The Biometrics Institute fosters a safe space for productive dialogue under Chatham House Rule, ensuring open and honest discussions on even the most sensitive topics. With balanced thought leadership and dialogue, the Institute addresses potential gaps in policy and technology, evolving into valuable guiding tools for decision-makers.

The Congress is for anyone seeking to deepen their understanding of biometrics applications and responsible use and presents a unique opportunity to connect with global representatives to gain an international perspective on the rapidly evolving landscape shaping the future of responsible biometrics innovation and implementation.
