Biometric modality: Eye: Iris – use cases

- Humanitarian agencies deploy iris recognition systems to assist beneficiaries in emergency situations, refugee camps etc. This enables people to establish their identity and authenticate it in order to obtain food, shelter, vouchers, financial services (ATM access) and other assistance as well as combating fraudulent demands for such resources (Refer to the Biometrics Institute Good Practice Framework B.5.3).
- Iris recognition is used in some smartphones for self- authentication purposes.
- Iris is one of the modalities used for airport e-gates and the latest technologies can scan the eyes of passengers as they walk past instead of the traditional static enrolment where the subject had to keep still and bring their eyes close to the scanner.
- Iris recognition is being used by some law enforcement agencies to supplement fingerprint and face recognition identity management resources and it is also used in some prisons to control inmate entry and exit requirements (for example, court attendance and return) and on-site access permissions.
- Iris samples, with the support of fingerprint and face modalities, may be used to deduplicate an entire database in order to determine if a person has more than one registration. This process is employed by the AADHAAR national registration database in India, which currently contains approximately 1.2 billion identities.
