Biometric modality: Finger geometry – key considerations
Finger shape and measurements do not provide a unique biometric in the same way as fingerprints or iris recognition. The technology does, however, deliver a usable identity verification process for large volumes of users where identity assurance or security requirements are lower. Finger geometry has a relatively fast enrolment time, compared, for example, with fingerprint enrolment, which makes it suitable for high volume throughput situations. It does not carry the same stigma as other biometrics because finger geometry data is not suited for search purposes in other databases. The equipment and processing costs are relatively low compared with other biometric modalities making finger geometry an attractive biometric in certain segments of the market.
